Top 5 Factors Influencing Consumer Restaurant Selection

Bringing in new and repeat customers is a main priority for any restaurant, from quick service to independently owned. In order to attract consumers, it’s important to understand what factors they consider when choosing a place to eat. Luckily, the National Restaurant Association conducted a survey to learn more about diners and what draws them through the doors of an establishment.

Here are the top 5 influential factors:

  1. Online & Offline Recommendations: When looking for a new restaurant, consumers typically start their search by asking friends, family, and peers for recommendations, but it doesn’t end there. Although the influence of word-of-mouth is powerful, it only puts the recommended restaurant into a consideration phase, which leads the consumer to conduct additional research online for validation.
  2. Digital Footprint: The way that customers find and choose restaurants has moved into the digital world. With 92% of consumers searching online and 81% using a mobile app to conduct their search, it’s important to ensure your restaurant has a strong online presence. That way, when consumers are conducting their search, they’re sure to find your establishment – no matter what device they use; smartphone, tablet, or computer.
  3. Customer Service: Once you get customers through your doors, the way that you and your staff treat them will greatly influence their overall experience. Grass Roots found that 74% of diners said customer service is what influences their dining decision the most. Customers who have had a positive experience are likely to visit again and recommend your restaurant to others.
  4. Food Quality: According to a study conducted by the National Restaurant Association, a majority of diners claim to be more adventurous when selecting their meal at a restaurant and are looking to order dishes they can’t make at home. Additionally, a majority of restaurant-goers are interested in healthier food options and are paying more attention to nutritional content, so it’s important to provide those details.
  5. Technology: Consumers are more connected than ever, and the importance of technology as a part of their dining experience is on the rise. Providing your wait staff with handheld devices to take orders, displaying your menu on a tablet at the table, or supplying your customers with free Wi-Fi all contribute to a positive dining experience.

While direct customer interaction still plays a role in the overall dining experience, consumers are becoming increasingly influenced by a restaurant’s online presence. Attract customers into your establishment by creating a strong digital footprint through the use of websites, social media, and review sites – and keep customers coming back by integrating technology into the experience and delivering exceptional customer service.

3 Big Challenges Faced by Franchisees

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to join in on a quick service restaurant company event, allowing me to speak with a variety of franchisees from across the country about the challenges they are currently facing. After receiving a variety of responses, I came to realize that there were three challenges in particular that plagued almost all franchisees; signage, weather, and engaging their local communities.

  1. Signage: Updating and maintaining the restaurant signage and menus can be very cumbersome. Many of the franchisees that I spoke with noted how long it takes them to complete a minor price change, especially if they own multiple locations. While they were receiving great promotional deals and posters from their corporate office, it was becoming a challenge to ensure all customer-facing materials were up to date. Having the ability to update menu items remotely instead of traveling to each location can save operators a great deal of time and money.lynx_purchasing_specials_menu
  2. Weather: Obviously, weather is something that no one has control over, yet it has a significant impact on franchise restaurants. A study conducted by the National Restaurant Association (NRA) found that 87% of quick service restaurants experience an impact on their sales and traffic as a result of weather. In order to safeguard revenue, restaurants need to prepare against external factors by planning ahead (as much as possible) and creating timely marketing messages. For example, in the event of a cold and rainy day, the restaurant should promote hot soups or coffee instead of ice cream.Wawa-Coffee
  3. Community Engagement: The acceptance and support of the local community plays a significant role in the success of a franchise location. According to the NRA, 94% of restaurant operators have given to charities to support the communities around them. However, with so many establishments contributing time and money to their local community, it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd. Utilizing social media in addition to offline activities allows for restaurants to create an engaging multi-channel experience for their audience. Establishing an online presence also provides your community with a place to “live” and interact with each other and your brand.photo (15)

What these three challenges have in common is the need to disseminate the right content, to the right audience, at the right time. Whether it’s updating signage to reflect the latest pricing changes, promoting a “weather appropriate” dish, or using social media to stir up buzz about an upcoming charity event – having the ability to publish updates or messages quickly and easily is important.

To overcome this, restaurants are adopting digital signage, social media, and marketing automation to reach and engage their customers, but the best solution is one that allows each of these elements to seamlessly work together. To learn more, click here.

Restaurants Increase Local Traffic with Google Maps

One of the biggest hurdles for any business to overcome is getting found by their potential customers. While social media and traditional word of mouth can help drive awareness, being listed in local search results can have a significant impact. Recognizing the importance of providing users with local information, Google has included an “Explore Nearby” feature to their Maps product.

Now, this feature has been available for a while – and in a couple of different formats – but it wasn’t until recently that its impact on the success of local establishments has become apparent. Google Maps’ Explore Nearby provides businesses with the ability to improve the user experience for their customers by allowing them to discover without searching.

Explore Toronto

Explore Nearby lets customers view businesses and services that are in their specific area, which means your establishment is now discoverable even if someone isn’t searching for your particular industry. Customers are able to view and post reviews of your business while in Google Maps, which can significantly influence purchasing decisions. In fact, a recent study by Dimensional Research found that more than 90% of respondents are influenced by online reviews.

Additionally, customers can easily access directions, hours of operation, current traffic conditions leading to your location, and any images your establishment or customers have posted online. Users can also click on the save button in Google Maps to save your location and business information to their personal database.

Google Map details

However – since a majority of local searches are conducted using a mobile device, and 90% of those mobile searches lead to action, Google Maps made sure that the contact number and website address were front and center – allowing consumers to connect quickly and easily with your establishment on-line. And since a large number of individuals are getting to your website and menu with their mobile device, it’s vital to have a website that’s responsive. This means that your website adjusts itself automatically to look great on any screen.

So what do you need to do in order to ensure your business can be found on Google Maps? Do a search for your restaurant to see if it’s already listed. If so, all you need to do is click on “is this your business” to take control and fill out the appropriate details. But better yet, speak to your website developer. Not only can they help with establishing your presence on Google Maps, but they can also ensure that your website is responsive. To learn more, check out our previous post by clicking here.

5 Tips to Increase Your Restaurant’s Website Traffic

increase website traffic

Without a doubt, establishing an online presence is essential for attracting customers and increasing credibility. More and more consumers are starting their search online before even stepping out of the house. If your restaurant doesn’t turn up in search results, it’s safe to assume that not many of these customers will turn up in your establishment.

We’ve compiled a list of 5 tips that will help you attract consumers to your website and convert them into customers:

  1. Your website needs to be responsive: Smartphones and tablets are quickly taking over as the most frequently used devices for searching online. In fact, research firm Chadwick Martin Bailey found that 81% of consumers have searched for a restaurant on a mobile app and 92% have searched through a web browser. A responsive website allows you to create a site that looks great across all devices – whether it’s on a computer, phone, or tablet, consumers will have an exceptional experience with your establishment.
  2. Add amazing images & pictures: Including high-resolution pictures of your most popular meals is a great way of enticing customers to visit your establishment. People tend to eat with their eyes, and providing images of your food gives consumers a sense of what they can expect when they sit down in your restaurant. It’s also important to include pictures of your establishment and staff, as they’re a part of the experience your restaurant provides too. The images of your food, décor, and staff will help customers set their expectations and help them anticipate what type of overall experience they can expect.
  3. Make your menu stand out: People love to check out the menu prior to visiting a restaurant. In fact, 80% of consumers want to see a menu before they eat at an establishment, and 70% want to be able to easily read the menu on a mobile device. Menus are the number one thing that consumers look for when they visit your restaurant’s website, and poor usability or hard-to-find information result in a poor user experience. If a customer isn’t able to easily read and access your menu, it’s likely they won’t visit your restaurant either. A recent survey found that 62% of consumers are less likely to choose a restaurant if they can’t read the menu on a mobile device.
  4. Integrate your events: One of the best ways to invite consumers to engage with your brand or establishment is to host an event. This can include industry nights, community achievements, special occasions, or charity fundraisers – the sky is the limit! Making your event easily sharable through the use of social media or calendar widgets encourages consumers to invite others and spread the word. Events also have the ability to create a lot of buzz for your brand online as attendees share their pictures and reviews through blogs and social media.
  5. Get social media savvy: Which brings me to my last tip – you need to be involved on social media! Channels like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook are fantastic tools for building relationships with customers, humanizing your brand, generating awareness, and promoting any events or specials. Social media is an interactive platform that encourages users to become engaged in the community – so it’s the perfect environment for soliciting feedback or providing updates.

The question you might ask yourself after reading these tips is “who has time to do all these things?” As a restaurant owner, you’ve likely taken on multiple roles in order to keep your customers happy and your kitchen running smoothly. Automating as many digital components as possible is a great way to free up some of your time, so finding a platform or service that is robust enough to deliver on your requirements is essential. 6 Restaurant Tips for Patio Season

Summer is finally here and patrons have been waiting all winter to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. Providing a great patio atmosphere will help your restaurant stand out and attract those looking to soak up all the season has to offer. So what can you do to set your place apart and entice visitors? Here are 6 tips for patio season:

6 Patio Tips

  1. Make it attractive: Don’t just run up to your local department store and buy cheap plastic chairs. Choose seating that matches the overall decor of your restaurant to create an experience for your diners. It’s also likely that your customers will be enticed to stay longer if the seating is comfortable, leading to additional sales – because who wants to sit on a patio without a drink?
  2. Include plants: Not only do they smell great, but they add to your patio’s ambience. If you don’t have a lot of space, consider placing planters along your patio’s perimeter. This is also an opportunity to incorporate fresh herbs in your drinks and meals – you can’t get more “locally grown” than using plants from your own patio.
  3. Make it comfortable: As mentioned above, comfortable seating can increase the length of time a customer stays at your restaurant. Some other ways you can make your patio space more enjoyable for customers is to include insect repellent, like a citronella candle, to keep annoying pests away. You may also want to include a source of heat during the cooler nights.
  4. Use the power of smell: When hungry, it can be hard to resist the smell of good food. If you have the space, setting up an outdoor BBQ is a good way to lead patrons to your patio – nose first. Having one of your chefs outside cooking is also entertaining for customers, giving them a peak behind the curtain, while allowing your chefs to showcase their talent.
  5. Use a digital menu board: Double-sided rolling menu boards and chalk sandwich boards are so 2014. Several restaurants are utilizing digital menu boards to display their menus and promote their specials or upcoming events. Digital menu boards are much more engaging than hand-written signs, and they provide restaurants with the ability to show pictures of their dishes and drinks (which is great, since most people “eat” with their eyes).
  6. Help out your servers: Patio season means more work for your servers. The distance between the kitchen, drink stations and point of sale (POS) terminals, which adds extra wait time. Make life easier and create a better experience for your customers by setting up a server station close to or on the patio. This allows your servers to provide diners with refills, extra napkins, condiments, or cutlery quickly and easily.
